revised 9/2/11, subject to change without prior notice)

Only Colorado K-12 teachers with an active teaching license are eligible to earn a Certificate in Economic Education (Certificate) offered jointly by the Colorado Council for Economic Education (CCEE) and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) by taking a required selection of CCEE classes for graduate-level credit. Undergraduate credits in economics are not eligible to be applied toward the Certificate. To qualify for the Certificate teachers must complete twelve (12) credit hours distributed as follows: Economics for Educators (3-credits), a survey of macroeconomic and microeconomic topics; Methods for Teaching Economics (3-credits); and six (6) credits of additional elective CCEE economic education classes.

Teachers who earn the Certificate will receive a transcript entry from UCCS reflecting attainment of the certificate as well as a signed, embossed certificate suitable for framing.

CCEE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Economics 501:  Economics for Educators (online)

Explores the way in which a market economy functions and the role of government. Includes microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts, particularly those relevant to K-12 economic educators. Prerequisite: Undergraduate degree.

Economics 604:  Methods for Teaching Economics (5 days)

Focuses on activity-based economics materials and methods for secondary-level teachers. Teachers experience and discuss both microeconomic and macroeconomic lessons that are designed to address the Colorado Academic Standards in Economics effective for the 2011-12 school year. The following CCEE classes that were/are taken for credit will substitute for Economics 604:  Economics for Leaders (Foundation for Teaching Economics class) taken in 2011 or 2012; Economics for Beginners (June 2003, formerly, Econ 631); It’s Not Your Father’s Economics Class (June 2002, formerly Econ 631).  Prerequisite: Undergraduate degree.

Economics 631:  Various Economics Topics (electives)

These seminars explore a variety of topics designed to enhance the understanding and teaching of economics. They emphasize themes, topics and strategies most appropriate to motivate student interest in economics.  These classes frequently integrate economics with other disciplines.  Prerequisite: Undergraduate degree.

*A Certificate in Elementary Economic Education is still available for those teachers who completed Methods for Teaching Elementary Economics (Mini-Society) (Economics 603) in 2009, or earlier.  In this case, Economics 603 substitutes for Economics 604.  As of 2010, Economics 603 is no longer offered.

TRANSFER CREDIT FOR ECONOMICS 631

Elective credit toward the Certificate will be granted for Economics 631 credits previously completed through CCEE/UCCS Extended Studies since 2001. Economics 631 credits that have the same subtitle will earn credit only once.  No more than two (2) graduate-level economics credits (semester) granted by other universities for economic education classes offered by other State Councils, university-based Centers for Economic Education, or by the Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE), are eligible for transfer to UCCS in order to count toward the Certificate.

Procedure for obtaining the Certificate:

1)      Take the requisite CCEE classes for graduate-level credit as described above.

2)      Request an official transcript from the UCCS office of Extended Studies (or from another university, if you are seeking to count transfer credits as described above) to verify your graduate-level coursework in economics.

3)      Request from CCEE a Certificate in Economic Education Application Form (available electronically by request).

4)      Complete the form and send it, along with your official transcripts, to the Education Program Director at CCEE (address below).

5)      CCEE will verify your coursework requirements, prepare a certificate and forward these materials to the Extended Studies office, UCCS. They will check their records and verify your completion of the Certificate requirements, provide the signature of a University official and notify the UCCS records office to add the Certificate to your official UCCS transcript. They will then return the certificate to CCEE. CCEE will inform you when we have received your authenticated Certificate and will forward it to you.
